How to choose the appropriate power supply for desktop computers

The power supply is the heart of the desktop computer, and all the accessories in the host computer need it to supply power. If you buy an inappropriate power supply or a dummy label power supply, the Black screen of death crashes when the power supply is not enough to play games, and the output is unstable, leading to strange problems, or damaging other hardware, the computer GG. The emperor is not inferior to hungry soldiers. If there is a problem with the power supply, it will affect other accessories on the computer host.

On the market, power sources are mixed, with prices ranging from tens to thousands of yuan. Most waste power sources have false labels, low cost-effectiveness, and even the risk of exploding power sources. Therefore, choosing a suitable power source is particularly important.

Desktop computer power supply

1、 Power nameplate

As shown in the figure, the power output is divided into+12V,+5V,+3.3V, -12V, and+5VSB.

In today's desktop hosts, processors (all powered by+12V) and graphics cards (the vast majority of+12V) are the places with the highest power consumption in computers. The motherboard has 12V,+5V, and+3.3V, but it is relatively small and usually only consumes tens of watts of power. So when choosing a power supply, you only need to look at the+12V part. The peak value of the power supply comes from the multiplication of+12V and the corresponding current: 12Vx40A=480W, which is more than enough for the combination of i5+1060 and 480W.

The 500W power supply on the Deepwater Treasure, which costs dozens of yuan each, is often insane, but the+12V output is only 12A, which means that the actual 12V output capacity used is only 144W. Even if used in machines with i3+750ti, it will significantly overload. So be extremely careful when choosing!

2、 80PLUS

80PLUS is a set of environmental standards customized by the United States. If the power supply is marked with the 80PLUS symbol, it represents a high conversion rate and has a positive effect on energy conservation and environmental protection. However, there is a common misconception about 80PLUS that many people prioritize gold medals when buying power supplies. However, 80PLUS is only an energy-saving and environmentally friendly certification, and it does not care about other things such as the stability of labor, material output, etc. Therefore, a gold medal for 80PLUS does not mean that the entire power supply is a gold medal.

3、 Module

There are three types of power modules: non module, half module, and full module.

Non module: Non module is very simple, all wires are soldered onto the power PCB and cannot be disassembled. Most wires within 500W are planned in this way.

Half module: The processor cable and motherboard cable in the half module are still soldered out, and the remaining hard disk graphics card and other wires are planned as plugs for disassembly.

Full module: All wires are plug-in, and high-end high wattage power supplies are basically designed with full module design, which is very suitable for DIY players who want to use customized cables. In addition, if using a special chassis, the wires can also be replaced to prevent them from being unreachable or too long.

For most users, a half module power supply is sufficient to operate without the need to pursue the ultimate.
